Family and Social Policy

Hold back those tears people, and get ready for the last flipped video of 2014

Before you gaan aall festive on me, here is a wee video on how social policies (those things that the government introduce every now and then) impact on families, and how a changing society may contribute to their existence. In addition to watching this BAFTA standard video, please bring you file with you to the lesson as we will also be doing reflection work.

CLICK HERE FOR COPY OF PPT - I will email the PPT to you as it appears to be a bit of an issue accessing it for some people.

Childhood Week 2 - Is childhood improving?

This week we look at whether childhood is better now than before, or whether we are placing greater controls to the detriment of young people.  Don't forget to bring a summarised news article from this week on childhood.  We will be discussing and applying theory to it.

CLICK HERE for a copy of the PowerPoint. It has also been emailed to you.

Childhood as a social construct

We are looking at the idea that childhood is not necessarily the same for everyone, and where you come from, and the time you were a 'child' impacts massively on your experiences. In addition to the video, please access the stats on domestic violence on last weeks blog page - you will need them (hint hint nudge nudge)

Changing gender roles?

Questions to consider when watching the video - we will explore these in class.

  • What impact could increased diversity have on the family, especially children?
  • To what extent have women gained quality within the household?
  • What positive impact might an additional income have on family life?

Please ensure you bring your notes to your class.

Half term Scrapbook

Over half term you have to create a scrapbook of news stories/adverts/TV that show how the family is changing and becoming more diverse
(about 8-10 stories which may link or be different to each other, and from more than 1 source)

I expect to see notes/annotations, and links to sociological theory for each one

I will put a video for next lesson on here over half term so keep an eye out for that!!!
